Safety of our dams

The safety of aged dams is a matter of serious environmental concern. The controversy relating to the Mullaperiyar dam in Kerala-Tamil Nadu border is still a burning issue.

Opinions differ on the safety of dams whether it is old or new. However safety of dams has a bearing on environmental safety and the survival of human population. Some of the major dam disasters, like the Banqio dam disaster (China) in 1975 spelt the doom of several villages and cities besides claiming the lives of tens of thousands.

I look forward to Safety Messenger focusing on manmade disasters like these and its impact on environment in one of your coming issues.
